What’s the Difference Between a Spa and a Medical Spa?
While both spas and medical spas offer treatments to help you look and feel your best, there are some key differences between the two.
Traditional Spas
Traditional spas—also known as day spas—primarily offer services to promote relaxation and reduce stress, such as massages, facials, aromatherapy, and hydrotherapy. Traditional spas are usually staffed by massage therapists, estheticians, and wellness professionals. They are highly skilled and licensed in their field, but are not legally able to perform certain treatments, such as injectables.
Medical Spas
Medical spa treatments encompass a broader range of services that include traditional spa services and medical or cosmetic procedures. You can receive treatments like Botox injections, dermal fillers, laser therapies, and chemical peels at medical spas, where you generally cannot at a day spa.
Medical spas have licensed medical professionals, such as doctors, nurse practitioners, or physician assistants on staff. Treatments like Botox injections and fillers are considered clinical therapies and can only be legally administered by a healthcare professional. In addition, services like medical weight loss and laser hair removal procedures must be performed by a doctor or nurse practitioner.
